What to Expect
Most procedures in the cath lab are performed while you're awake, with local anesthesia. A cath lab shouldn't be confused with an operating theatre, where you would have surgery such as a heart bypass operation under general anesthesia.
Common Cath Lab Procedures

- Diagnoses coronary artery disease
- Identifies blockages
- 30-60 minute procedure
Angioplasty
A procedure to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries using a balloon and often a stent.
- Restores blood flow to heart
- Minimally invasive
- 1-2 hour procedure
Ablation
Treatment for abnormal heart rhythms that uses heat or cold energy to create scar tissue.
- Treats arrhythmias
- Corrects electrical pathways
- 2-4 hour procedure
Pacemaker Implantation
A small device implanted to help control abnormal heart rhythms.
- Treats slow heart rhythms
- Outpatient procedure
- 1-2 hour procedure
ICD Implantation
Implantable cardioverter defibrillator monitors and treats life-threatening rhythms.
- Prevents sudden cardiac arrest
- Monitors heart continuously
- 2-3 hour procedure
Valvuloplasty
A procedure to repair a stiff heart valve using a balloon to widen the valve opening.
- Treats valve stenosis
- Improves blood flow
- 1-2 hour procedure
